Archbishop Chaput Warns of "Fourth Estate"

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, JULY 12, 2009 (Zenit.org).- The news media have incredible influence over how opinion is formed, and it's urgent for Catholics to understand how news is reported and who works behind the scenes, says Archbishop Charles Chaput.
 
The archbishop of Denver said this last week in an address he gave to Legatus, an organization that ministers to Catholic business leaders.
 
His talk was titled "Catholics and the 'Fourth Estate,'" making reference to a term coined in revolutionary times. At that time in France, the three main pillars of society -- the clergy, the nobles and the common people -- were referred to as the three "estates" of French society.

In was in that context that the press was referred to as the "fourth estate," acknowledging the power and influence of the written word.

Politicians Defend Disabled Persons

LONDON, JULY 8, 2009 (Zenit.org).- An amendment that proposed legalizing assisted suicide was defeated Tuesday evening in the House of Lords.

The London-based Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, an anti-euthanasia lobby group, reported that the amendment to the Coroners and Justice Bill, which would have allowed aiding the terminally ill to seek assisted suicide abroad, was rejected in a vote of 194 to 141.

The group's general secretary, Paul Tully, affirmed that this is a "significant victory for the right to life."

More Attention Turns to Sexual Trafficking Victims

ROME, JUNE 28, 2009 (Zenit.org).- The Vatican and groups of women religious have long been actively working to stop the trafficking of persons, and a recent message of support sent by Benedict XVI to a meeting on the issue held in Rome this month reiterated that this is a Church priority.

The Pontiff said it is important to bring about "a renewed awareness of the inestimable value of life and an ever more courageous commitment to the defense of human rights and the overcoming of every type of abuse."

SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO, Italy, JUNE 21, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI is marking World Refugee Day by calling for an end to conflicts that cause people to flee their homes, and underlining the duty to welcome these displaced persons.

The Pope said this today before praying the midday Angelus with those gathered at the Church of San Pio de Pietrelcina in San Giovanni Rotondo.

Condemn Attack as Contrary to Goals of Promoting Human Dignity

WICHITA, Kansas, JUNE 1, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Pro-life groups are denouncing the murder of abortionist George Tiller, as an act contrary to the cause of promoting respect for human life.

Father Frank Pavone, national director of Priests for Life, issued a statement expressing sadness over Sunday's killing.

"At this point, we do not know the motives of this act," he said, and "we should not jump to conclusions or rush to judgment."
