Cardinal Van Thuân Observatory Comments on "Caritas in Veritate"
VERONA, Italy, JULY 15, 2009 (Zenit.org).-
Benedict XVI's encyclical "Caritas in Veritate" puts God at the center
of the social questions, says the secretary of the Pontifical Council
for Justice and Peace.
Archbishop Giampaolo Crepaldi, who is
also the president of the Cardinal Van Thuân International Observatory
for the Social Doctrine of the Church, wrote this in an article to
appear Thursday in the weekly magazine Tempi. The article, titled "The
Pope Knows Where We Have to Go," was posted today on the observatory's
Web site.
The archbishop noted that the encyclical reiterates
that the social teaching of the Church "sets its sights on the heart of
the problem regarding the construction of the world and transforms the
social issue [...] into nothing less than the issue of 'integral human
development in charity and truth.'"

Archbishop Chaput Warns of "Fourth Estate"
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, JULY 12, 2009 (Zenit.org).-
The news media have incredible influence over how opinion is formed,
and it's urgent for Catholics to understand how news is reported and
who works behind the scenes, says Archbishop Charles Chaput.
The
archbishop of Denver said this last week in an address he gave to
Legatus, an organization that ministers to Catholic business leaders.
His
talk was titled "Catholics and the 'Fourth Estate,'" making reference
to a term coined in revolutionary times. At that time in France, the
three main pillars of society -- the clergy, the nobles and the common
people -- were referred to as the three "estates" of French society.
In
was in that context that the press was referred to as the "fourth
estate," acknowledging the power and influence of the written word.

LONDON, JULY 8, 2009 (Zenit.org).- An amendment that proposed legalizing assisted suicide was defeated Tuesday evening in the House of Lords.
The
London-based Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, an
anti-euthanasia lobby group, reported that the amendment to the
Coroners and Justice Bill, which would have allowed aiding the

Britain’s Leaders Warn of the Loss of Common Values
By Father John Flynn, LC
ROME, JULY 5, 2009 (Zenit.org).-
The decline of Christianity and moral values in general is reaching new
lows in Britain. While the number of faithful has been decreasing for
some time now, warnings about the situation are starting to come from
all quarters.
Britain is no longer a Christian nation, affirmed
Anglican bishop, Paul Richardson, in an article published Jun. 27 in
the Sunday Telegraph newspaper.
The Anglican prelate was also
critical of his fellow bishops for not understanding just how serious
the change is in contemporary culture, and for their lack of action in
dealing with this serious crisis of faith.
